Death certificate copies: how many to order

Most families need eight to twelve certified copies. Where to order them, what they cost, and which agencies require originals.

Order ten to twelve certified copies as a baseline. Banks, brokerages, life insurance carriers, the Social Security Administration, the IRS, and most title transfers require an original certified copy rather than a photocopy. Order through the funeral home or directly from the state vital records office.

Step by step

  1. Order through the funeral home

Most funeral homes order the first batch with the state vital records office. Add a few extra at this stage.

  2. Order direct from vital records

If you need more later, order from the state vital records office or, in some states, the county clerk.

  3. Use originals for institutions

Banks, brokerages, life insurance, the SSA, and the IRS each want an original certified copy. Photocopies are usually rejected.

  4. Track who has each copy

Keep a short log so you know how many copies are still available.
